A roll-down screen across the garage opening so the door can stay up for air, light and a comfortable workspace.
A garage is the hardest-working room in many homes: a workshop, a gym, a hobby room, a kids play space. Opening the big door brings in air and light, and it also brings in every flying insect in the neighborhood. A retractable screen solves that problem without giving up the open feeling.
We mount the housing above the garage opening, run the tracks down the sides and fit the screen to span the full width. Because garage openings are wide, the screen is built with a sturdier roller, a stronger motor and tracks designed for the span. We coordinate with the door so the two do not collide, and we set the screen to clear the opener and rails.
A single-car opening is eight to ten feet wide and a double is sixteen or more. Wide screens need heavier housings and motors, and in some cases a center support.
The screen goes outside or inside the door line depending on the clearance. We check the track of the door, the opener and any wiring before we choose.
A screen blocks insects and leaves, and it also cuts down on blowing debris. Heavier mesh options are available for shops.
A screen is not a security device, but a darker mesh gives some privacy while the door is up.

A screen is for insects and leaves, not for security. Keep valuables locked up.
